Learner response 2015 paper

1) Feedback/comments
(section A)
- 'editing-not camerawork
-'brands?'
-'need specific reference to text'
-'lacks depth / reference to clip for higher level'
-'lacks question focus'
(section B )
-'loosing a little question focus'
-'starts brilliantly but looses question focus towards end'
-'need to apply convergence correctly throughout'

2) Target grade
- predicted 'B' achieved 43- 8 marks away from target grade

3) Potential points
Q1- shot type
Q2- Sinatra, Megan fox, Las Vegas
Q3- Action/violence, male gaze-megan fox, iconography-dog    }All lacking question focus
Q4- positively

4) Strongest answer section A
Question 3- most successful because points were easy to take from the text

5) Weakest question section A
Question 1- weakest question because I misinterpreted the question and began talking about editing when question was about camerawork,

6) Re-write weakest question-1
The use of long shots and wide angles allow the audience to see more of the scene and get a feel for the surroundings in the game. For example at the beginning long-shots allowed the audience to see the destroyed and dilapidated Las Vegas, moreover we could see other noticeable places like hotels in Las vegas and this helps set the scene for the audience.

Furthermore, the use of camera tracking helps the audience keep up with what's going on in the scene and feel as if they are following the action. This is shown when the camera begins tracking a vehicle on the snowy/icy terrain, the tracking shot is significant here because this scene has lots of action and this allows the audience to appreciate all of it.

Subsequently, the use of a handheld/stedicam creates a more intimate viewing because the audience are made to feel as if they are also in the scene, making it more entertaining. For instance, when they are fighting in the casino the camera is a lot closer to the protagonists and is more shaky than other scenes because this has a lot of action, moreover if this scene had a few long shots it wouldn't have the same effect as the handheld/stedicam.

7) Section B criteria
- I covered all 3 media platforms as well as 3 film case studies in sufficient depth.

8) Key words used
- Key words from the question were used in every paragraph however the paragraph on the Inbetweenrs I had used convergence incorrectly when talking about print, similarly when talking about ill manors print I had also talked about convergence incorrectly.

9) Examiners report
- Section A, As mentioned in the examiners report I fell into the trap of talking about editing on the camera-work question. Moreover, in question 3 i managed to mention several things in the examiners report that many other people had made. Although, on question 4 i failed to make many obvious points such as gun violence being without consequence as no enemies in the clip were killed, In question 2 i made several of the points however didn't always link them to the question and how they might promote the film for example in the examiners report it talks about megan fox but also goes onto mention the transformers brand and how this might promote the game.

-Section B, Q5- the first half of my essay fits the examiners report with constant and correct use of the key word 'convergence' and more specifically the impact of this on one device. Although the second half wasn't as consistent.

10) 3 Things to do differently
1- For section A read the questions carefully and don't go off topic
2- both sections- keep referring back to the question at the end of each paragraph
3- both sections- find theories that fit examples I have, not the other way around.

Section B essay (half)

The platform in question is film and 3 media products will be analysed including Ill manors, A Field in England and Inbetweeners as part of my independent case studies. In this essay i will be looking into how these films are constructed based on the platforms they are consumed on. This will involve looking into print,e-media and broadcast platforms of these 3 films.

E-media is a platform growing more important as technology advances so to construct a successful product, films such as Ill manors will need to take advantage of the resources available. Ill manors successfully created the 'tag-London campaign' which appeals to Plan B's younger target audience between 15-21 who are more inclined to use social media.  The Tag London campaign is a product of user generated content and Plan B's record company have created a website and video to promote this campaign which is mainly focused on posting opinions on social media websites. The campaign is attempting to focus peoples anger towards the people that are responsible for their problems and this is why the Tag London Campaigns video projected the graffiti tweets onto the Houses of Parliament and other politically significant buildings. The Campaign also gave people who tweeted exclusive access to a couple of songs from the unreleased album on soundcloud. This was successful with Ill manors because of the target audience however, a campaign like this would struggle among films like a field in England because of the difference in target audience and release strategy.

Subsequently, A field in England didnt have a very strong e-media campaign. Instead it offered a website offering a few behind the scenes exclusive interviews ect... But this didnt matter because their target audience would be placed in the succeder pychographic group and they are more interested in the 'art' behind the film making rather than the website. Whereas, Ill manors audience would most likely fall under the mainstreamers/strugglers psychographic groups and are more inclined to constantly use services such as twitter- the platform in which the tag London campaign was focused on.

Within the last decade print has become a dying media, nevertheless it seems mandatory that films still produce some kind of print for advertisement. And all of the films I am using in my cross media study have a film poster. Although less significant than e-media and broadcast, print does help construct the media product by telling the audience who the director is. And this is show on the Ill manors and a field in England posters as these films are lower budget and targeted at different audiences and so the directors name is featured frequently on the posters to establish a brand for the film and a name for themselves. However, for the Inbetweeners the poster is a lot more simple as a brand has already been created by the successful tv show. Although print is becoming less and less significant its almost a tradition to still make posters for films to inform audiences.

Field in England appeal

1)The article talks about different audience being able to view art house films. Elitism plays a big factor in deciding the different pleasures audiences get, for example middle class people pay see it as entertainment compared to viewing mainstream Hollywood movies and maybe lower class people who view art house films may see them for narrative and its art.

2)Some audiences are so use to the Hollywood blockbusters and their typical, generic film structures including equilibrium-dis equilibrium and new equilibrium. Art house films tend not to have no narrative closure and therefore make audiences feel estranged to the film genre. This links to
Todorov's theory of equilibrium.
3)Art house films have always been directed at a certain age group, even the décor and location of the cinemas helps differentiate it from that of those from larger chain cinemas, for example; art house cinemas tend to be in cities and blend in with the surroundings. They are also a lot more expensive then regular cinema tickets because they feel as though they are supplying to a more wealthy audience.

4)A field in England fits the bill perfectly for being an art house production. From the start you can tell that it is an art house production and that it was made for being art and not for the money. I think this would suit a typical art house audience being middle class/middle age people.

independent case study

1) The inbetweeners movie, directed by Ben Plamer. The four main protagonists are Simon Bird as Will, Blake Harrison Neil, James Buckley as Jay and Joe Thomas as Simon.

b) The film was released in 2011-August 17th A level results day.

c) This film is described as a 'coming-of-age' film, also comedy because the characters are seen growing up from the sitcom show on e4, whilst retaining its same sarcastic and dirty humour.

d) This film was given a 6.8 star rating out of 10 on IMDB.

2)Broadcast

a) The trailer features a montage of clips from the film arranged in a way that it sort of tells the audience whats going to happen or what to expect. The narrative is non-linear as it features clips from different parts if the film which include more action.Aslo, Todorovs theory can loosley be applied to the trailer as its starts off fun with them finsihing school and going on holiday but it reaches disequilibrium with the drama they face but achieves a new equilibrium towards the end. Also at the beginning film 4's logo was shown on screen, this is also consistent throughout the television series which inspired the movie. In terms of audience Blumer and Katz theory can be applied with the main use being 'personal relationship' as the trailer and movie are mainly targeted at people who are fond of the inbetweeners series. Furthermore, young people in this trailer are represented as reckless when on holiday, this is shown by the montages of heavy drinking. This also reinforces the dominant stereotype that young adults are irresponsible.

B)

The interview of the protagonists make it more personal to the audience as these are the characters that people are used to seeing from the tv show. Moreover, its more bias but in a discreet way as normally there would be quotes from the producers on how the film is not always the actors, and this makes people more inclined to go and see the film. Also, the interview featured exclusive clips from the movie not seen in the trailer to tease the audience a little bit more.

The world premier of the movie helps to promote it across various different media institutions with news channels and different media magazines and journalists. It also gives the audience a chance to hear from various members of cast and crew their first impressions of the movie.
C) Both the interview and the premier feature stars from the film, some of which are more recognisable than others.

Print
A)
The film, like the series, is so close to the truth regarding being 17/18 and the rubbish you get up to that you can't help but be dragged into the world of Neil, Jay, Simon and Will.

After awhile, I loved watching them and their interactions with the females, who were also entertaining. Enough so, I would like to get the series this was based on and then rewatch this supposedly movie made to close out the TV program.

The film shares the same theme as American Pie And Beavis And Butt-Head Do America, because a group of teenage boys try their very best to loose their virginity when on their holidays!

B)
This film poster features the four main protagonists acting 'goofy' as per usual and fans of the tv show would know this. Also, this features some review quotes and taglines which attract the audience. The star ratings at the top of the poster also suggests to the audience that the film is going to be worth while.

C) There are lots of vivid colours used to attract the audience as well as the exotic setting on the beach. The use of the four main characters suggests to the audience that it will be a feature length of the tv show, so this secures an already captured audience from the tv show. Also the females in swimwear lounging around the pool reinforce mulveys idea of the male gaze and this could potentially attract a larger male audience.

E-media

B) The brand radiates British humour with lots of sarcasm and 'dirty' jokes, in comparison to other British brands its quite different in the sense a movie has come out of the tv show, although another comedy similar would be American pie or cuckoo.

C) Not applicable

D) The four main characters had all promoted the film through their social media.

Audience
A) The target audience for this film would apply to both males and females. The age rang for this film would be between 14-30. In terms of the demographic groups it would be between the C.D and E groups.

B) There isnt really any campaign only the trailer and the posters because the inbetweeners is well known by many people for its tv shows prior to the movie.

C) The audience pleasures from this film are mainly to entertain as the film and the tv show is a comedy and is simply there to make people laugh.

D) Audiences would also enjoy films and shows like american pie because of the dirty jokes and innuendos.

Institution
A)The film was produced by Bwark Productions, Film4 and Young Films. Bwark Productions' only production is this film, however Young Films and Film4 have a wide range of films. Film 4 and channel 4 have produced the inbetweeners tv show.

B) Other films include 'American hustle, hugo, scream4 and wild target.

C) It depends because the films they produce vary in genre and therefore audience.

D) 3.5 million pounds

E) 88 million dollars worldwide, and this could be because it was long anticipated mainly by fans of the tv show.

F) It was more successful here rather than worldwide because the inbetweeners is about british humour and an american spin-off was made but didnt do well at all. Also because the show aired on british tv first.

G) The film was judged and given a 15 rated certificate by the BBFC. This is becuase of the sexual refrecnes and humour, along with the bad language used.

Representation
A)Representations of different socio economic groups are shown with-in the four main protagonists. For example the character Will could fit into the category of C1 whilst is friend Neil may fit into the C2 or D category because of the careers of their families.

B) Patriotism is shown when Jay parades around the foreign county with his england jersey on. Also the dirty and sarcastic innuendos reinforce the idea of Britishness but a more modern version.

C) A British value could be not giving up because all of the boys went their with a goal in mind and this was achieved by the end of the film.

Case study comparison

The main differences between the three films is the budget as The difference between Ill Manors and a field in England is huge but the difference between A field in England and The Inbetweeners is even larger. There is a similarity between A field in England and The Inbetweeners as they were both supported by Film 4, however they were both very different films.

Ill Manors e-media website analysis

1) Evidence of the Ill manors brand is clear from the logo in the corner which is reoccurring throughout different platforms including the album and the film. There is also a "#IllManors" painted on the wall of a house which links to Ill Manors twitter feed which helps promote the film on a wide scale across social media.

2)There is graffiti shown in the image on the homepage which says "Ill Manors buy now" this is subtle although may be effective as it could be directed to a particular market segment/target audience.

3)  Posts from Plan B's twitter posted around the homepage to show his most recent tweets. Also social media links there are icons of the social media sites and other links from the banner of the website.

4) The statement he made that you cant "justify the riots in any place but tottenham" shows that he condones it but understands why is happened in the area which there was conflict and no where else. He also went onto say about the upper classes looking down upon and ridiculing the lowe classes.

5)For most films of a large budget, they are aimed at target audience between the ages of 5-30, this includes young families, teenagers and children. within these groups these are the main users of social media and technology.

Ill Manors e-media Tag London

1)  The Tag London campaign is a product of user generated content and Plan B's record company have created a website and video to promote this campaign which is mainly focused on posting opinions on social media websites.

2) The campaign doesn't explicitly promote the film but more so the soundtrack and and from there the film. This is through whoever tweets the #illmanors receives early access to some of the songs from the illmanors album on soundcloud which promotes the film. Also in a more discreet way the locations used in the campaign ad are also in the film.

3) The tag London campaign has synergy links between the soundtrack as the campaign ad features music from the soundtrack. This helps to promote both the campaign and the soundtrack to the movie. Also the campaign had clips taken from the music video which further promotes it.

4) This user generated campaign may be more successful because its cheaper to produce than other campaigns and by advertising it on social media by tweeting a hashtag more people can get involved instead of turning up at a specific location to show support.

5)
#ILLMANORS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF CAMERON'S BROKEN BRITAIN
This tweet would be appeal to the struggler's psycho graphic group as people who arent doing so well will often blame the people who are in charge for their problems. This tweet could be linked to the music video because it is about politics and the the music video and song ill manors shows politicians being humiliated with an egg being thrown onto one of them.

ON PRINCIPLE, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TEENAGER LOOTING TRAINERS AND A POLITICIAN STEALING THOUSANDS IN EXPENSES? #ILLMANORS

This would appeal more to reformers because of the freedom of expression and challenging oppinion, but this also quite sophisticated in the way it is worded which makes it appeal more to reformers. This tweet would link to the tedx lecture that plan  spoke at as he talked about how the government wasnt treating people right and blamed them for the riots.

THE RECESSION IS A WORLD SCHEME TO KEEP THE POOR, POOR. THE RICH OF THIS WORD HAVE NEVER BEING RICHER. #ILLMANORS

This tweet would appeal more to the struggler's psychographic group because it mentions the poor getting poorer and this is something people in the struggler's category can relate to. This can be linked to the NME article in which plan B is expressing himself over issues concerning socioeconomic statuses.

#ILLMANORS, SOCIETY REBELLING BACK AT BROKEN BRITAIN,

This tweet would also be aimed at the struggler's and people who took part in or were involved some way in the London riots, and this is almost saying that the riots were imminent as a result of Britain not functioning properly. This could be linked to the music video and the song ill manors because the video shows scenes from the London riots followed by politicians not doing very much.

PLAN B'S #ILLMANORS MOVEMENT IS SICK, GET INVOLVED

This tweet would appeal more to the sturgglers but also to explorers as this would encourage people to learn more about it and possibly get involved and for the strugglers its more of a colloquial language to identify with. This could be linked to the Guardian article praising plan b over his movie and album.

Ill Manors print

1) The ill manors dvd cover has several features that you'd expect to find on a dvd cover which include the films tagline at the top and the main protagonist on the front cover as well as several other characters on the back. The title also stands out with it being yellow on a greyscale background. There are also some review quotes on the back of the cover.

2) The gun in the characters hand and the barbed wire and council estates help to establish the brand of ill manors as well as the reviews which help Plan B out as a first time director.

3) On the back of the cover there is synergy with the album as the special features of the dvd include the music video and behind the scenes. Also the central image of the man with the gun in his hands leaning over the 'ill' is also featured on posters and other covers.

1) The album cover for ill manors features a central image- the artist himself and the name of the album, the colour scheme is simple and has a background of London and this is where the film is set and what the album is based on. The record company is also featured towards the top of the image.

2) The background helps identity the ill manors brand as the film is set on the streets of london but not at the heart of it but more so the forgotten back streets of it thats why Central London is only in the background and in the way of this are council flats.

3) The main piece of synergy is with Ben Drew himself as he wrote ill manors the film and directed it and wrote and recorded the album. The record company at the top also features in the film as many of the songs in the album are in the film.

1) Another dvd cover but this is a little different as it features reviews on the front page and doesnt have the tagline anywhere and the back features some stills from the film, this dvd cover focuses more plan b himself whilst still showing people information about the film. However is still has the main things youd expect to see like a central image and title of the film being the largest things on the page.

2) The council estates help establish the brand as well as the gloomy street and a gun in his hands

3) There is a little synergy with the album with the special features being shown on the back.

Ill Manors Print platform

Men's health

- The target audience for Men's health magazine would typically be quite sophisticated. Also, a typical target audience for a Men's health magazine would be some one who fits in the age demographic of teenagers and adults, approximately 16-45, this is because these people may also fit into another group called the psychographics as they may be aspirer's who want to better themselves.

Also the magazine article has bold sub-headings and softer text beneath it. It also features interviews from celebs further down the page. There are pictures of Plan B throughout the article which is typical as the audience can see who they are reading about. The interview is intriguing for the reader as people want to find out how he managed to loose weight. There is a synergy between the behaviour in the film and plan b's political belief.

NME
- The target audience for this magazine and article would typically be between 16-30. And this would appeal more to a youthful audience because it is mainly online with different links taking you to extras about the article. It does entertain the audience but more than that, the way plan b talks and the article is written young people can have a personal identification with it and understand it more.

For print interviews the article features quotes and pictures from and of Ben Drew. The language keeps the reader interested throughout but ultimately at the end a link is given to the full interview. There is synergy when plan b talks about the album and the film but also through the pictures as the first one is similar to the album cover with him holding up his middle finger.

THE GUARDIAN
- The typical target audience for the guardian newspaper would be middle/upper class and 25 and over. Education/information is a uses and gratification that fits this article and newspaper as the people that tend to read the guardian wouldn't know the struggle of being brought up the way Ben Drew has been.

Quotes and images have been used as well as bold headings and subheadings to gain the readers attention. The article keeps the reader interested by building up a story with it starting in a reverse order talking about his film success but leading on to talk about his up-bringing. There is some synergy between the article and the album and film as it mentions all of them and gives quotes of Drew talking about them.

DAILY MAIL
The target audience for the daily mail would typically be lower-middle class and appeals a little bit more to women because of the gossip stories advertised. This article would be entertaining for some to read because of how critical it is.

This article uses pictures and links to videos which is quite typical also a bold heading and quote from the article. The only thing that would keep the reader interested with this article is to find out why ill manors is a bad movie and there isnt an interview with plan b nor quotes from him just para-phrasing from the songs in the movie. There is synergy with one of the images that is a still taken from the film.

ill manors broadcast platform concluded

DVD Extras
Plan B said he had attempted to address the misrepresentations of youth in London, however i believe it reinforced certain stereotypes against them especially in terms of violence. With production the film was produced by Microwave films london for roughly £80,000. The target audience will mainly fit into the struggler pychographic group but will branch out into people in the middle classes who are curious as to how the lower classes behave but also to see an aspiring new film director.

Broadcast/online
SBTV started out in 2006/7 as music service on the popular platform YouTube. It used to be only the young entrepreneur Jamal Edwards recording and uploading these grime rap video but as the channel grew a production team was put in place to deliver news and music to the demographic it was aimed at. This would appeal to a younger audience as both Plan B and Jamal edwards have a significantly large teenage following. Plan B can be seen as determined with 'ive been sleeping in the office'.

Television
The Jonathan Ross show is a prime time TV show that airs on ITV 1 at around 9/10 o'clock in the evening. The Ross' show, prior to this one used to air on BBC 1 but his contract with the BBc ended and he did not renew it. The socio-economic group for his audience would also be the C2 D and E's as more working class people may be more interested in his music. Because of this specific audience different groups of people will get different feelings about this music video.People may be interested in a show like Jonathan Ross for different reasons as the audience range for this show is quite large as people won't just be fans of Plan B but may also enjoy chat shows.

Radio
BBC Radio 1 is a renown radio station which usually brings in the most recent fame and ask the questions that audiences want to hear. Primarily, the target age group is 15-29 year olds, but statistics show that the average age of UK listeners were around 33. Plan B promotes the film by bringing it up in his answer to most of the questions and mentioning how much he works on it. For example, when Fearne asks him about his weight loss, he mentions how he had to stop drinking alcohol whilst filming Ill Manors.Plan B describes how he's been sleeping off a sofa in his studio because of the fact that he is putting in hard effort and time to edit 'Ill Manors'. Also, Plan B is described to have changed his look in terms of appearance and occupation (experiencing more with film than music at this point).

Ill Manors music video

1) Media forms
How is it typical of a music video?
Immediately from this video we can apply Medhursts theory of stereotyping with people in the video being from council estates and causing damage to peoples property. This video just reinforces peoples negative stereotypes against people from council estates. Also the use of montage editing fits the profile for a music video as it is typically fast paced and includes various different shots to help establish some sort of narrative. Moreover, the props and costumes are appropriate for the type of genre and medhursts theory can also be applied here because of the costumes worn here the audience may think that young people or people who dress like this are going to exhibit antisocial behaviour.

Furthermore, this is typical of a music video because it features the artist who wrote the song and the film as well as featuring characters from the film. Also the song and video was inspired by the London riots and actual footage was taken from that as well as politicians in the news for various but usually negative reasons. This links to levi Straus's theory on representation and ideologies as the people in the video and in reality from council estates tend to share the dominant ideology that all politicians are bad, however the middle class and beyond have the opposite dominant ideology and that is that 'chavs' are bad and disrespectful.

2)Media representation
How does it represent London riots/rioters?

In this music video we see scenes from the real London riots and staged ones. The use of establishing shots in the beginning of the music video (to show London "burning") makes you see the full scale of violence that was caused. This music video therefore shows a negative representation of London as it is not what the rest of the world and un-informed domestic audiences see London as, they see it as a place of wealth and tourism and are unaware that it is surrounded by these council estates which are all assumed to be bad because of shorthand stereotypes linked to Medhursts theory.

The rioters are also represented in this music video but as the way most people would expect to see them as you wouldn't expect to see a middle class white man joining in in the London riots and this reinforces that. The reason why we see the rioters as "chavs" and people on "council estates" is because these representations are formed from the ideologies that have been passed down form the opinion leaders which are usually the government and higher class white people. This links to Levi Strauss's theory on representation and ideology. Strauss also wrote about the producer of the text holding the set of values and beliefs but this doesn't link well with what Plan B may have been trying to communicate as his views of the politicians in the music video are overshadowed by the erratic violence caused by the rioters which he is saying is the government's fault. As a result we may see Plan B being hypocritical as what he is trying to resolve may cause further violence as he is showing what fun could be had of looting and rioting.

In this music video we see two types of people being represented in their own way by one opinion leader; Plan B. He states that on the one hand the politicians are the blame for the behaviour of the misguided youth which was a big factor in the riots but on the other hand the music video also portrays the group of people he is standing up for and representing as negative. Although true what he says about politicians never listening it contradicts himself and the people represented in the video as it shows stereotypes that are true about them. All together the way London is represented and the way the rioters were represented is done in a way to scapegoat the government as multiple people were to blame for the riots but the rioters were unable to accept responsibility. This idea of binary opposition is featured in music video but the audience will be split on who is good and who is evil between the politicians and the rioters which are frequently shown throughout the video.

3) Media audiences
What audience pleasures does the video offer?
The gratification that can be seen the most is personal identity as Plan b's audience would consist mainly of people in the c1/2 and lower bracket of social classes. With personal identity many people in the social class brackets can see themselves represented in the video and agree with the lyrics. Also the behaviour in the video can be similar to what some of the people in real life do and this just reinforces bad behaviour. This also links to the two-step flow model in which people will tend to listen to opinion leaders and a major one would be Plan B and his audience will often take in what he says without really thinking about it.

Because of this specific audience different groups of people will get different feelings about this music video. For example the groups in the lower part of the socio-economic classifications would get different pleasures out of this video than middle/higher class citizens. For example an 18 year old male may feel like Plan B is communicating with him directly due to the direct address and because he may idolise him as an artist making him and his loyal fan audience followers from an opinion leader. This is based on the two step flow model which also suggests that the opinion leader (Plan B) is influenced by the mass media but in this case we see it being subverted as Plan B doesn't seem to follow what the media says, especially about the working and lower classes.

Media institutions
How does the music video help to promote the film?
Firstly, there is lots of evidence of synergy between the video and the film including the use of characters from the film in the music video for example Chris is featured in both as a kingpin. Moreover, As an act of moral panic, the way that the news companies portray the youth is a way to create moral panic. The London Riots was a form of moral panic as there was a lot of rebellious actions and a lot of injured people which cause the streets of London to call for serious action on penalties and precautions for those that tried to harm and those who were innocent. A moral panic that much of society is afraid of is that youths and youngsters will run the streets of London making it less safe and becoming more out of control however, this hasn't and is less likely to happen.

Ill Manors broadcast

Ill Manors broadcast

2) Plan B talks about the youth being ignored by society which leads to them having no respect for authority.
I think that the audience are not of which Plan B is used to
may have felt ignored by society
poetry being a powerful tool in his fight for his opinion
reference to the word "chav", showed a strong dislike towards it
comes from hard backgrounds with dysfunctional families
they didn't respect anyone else's authority

3)Plan B's ideology/political ideas
Looking at Plan B's songs you could say that they are quite political and you can really see how he's trying to show off the negatives of his and others community to show the harsh reality to what needs changing and what the politicians are ignoring. In his song Ill Manors he makes references to certain politicians in particular which shows his aversion to the government. A quote that Plan B had in his film Ill Manors "we are all products of our environment" is quite significant as it shows not all environments are the same and he believes the one he came from and which so many other are coming from is not stable enough to support these humans as it will just turn them out how everyone sees them as thugs and "chavs" but the believes more can be done to help the environment that they come from.

4)The target audience is unusual in this case as a typical Ted audience would be for people that fit into the psychographic group of aspires and explorers and they may not be Plan B's typical audience as some of the groups that may fit into is struggler's who aren't necessarily an audience for Ted lectures, however this could be good as the people at the Tedx lecture would need to be ones educated about this matter so they don't just see one side of what the mass media has to say and stereotype they can hear it first hand and un-changed. I think that that a usual demographic for Ted lecture may be a higher percentage of females, roughly 55/45% or 60/40%. You could also suggest that the audience may be slightly older, approximately around the 40-50 mark, this is because they may just have more spare time and be more interested in new topics than younger people.

Question 3 re-write:
Family is represented as a seatbelt as they physically act to save the man by wrapping their arms around him but this is also an emotional seatbelt as they will stay with him as comfort for after the crash.

Furthermore, gender stereotypes are seen in this clip with the male of the family driving the car and the two females taking a back seat and ending up saving him. Moreover, Richard Dyers power stereotyping theory is also applicable to this clip as there is no real negative stereotype against the white male driving the car. This is also seen as quite traditional with families all over the globe with the father driving and accompanied by a partner and child who protect each other.

Another, way that family is represented in the clip is by being portrayed as protection. This is evident when the wife and daughter both wrap their arms in around the father/husbands body. This personification of the hands being represented as seatbelts really delivers a strong message to the consumer/audience who watch this video/clip. This clip follows Dyers family line of appeal as the audience will feel as if they want to be protected by family and this falls under the category of family in the 13 lines of appeal. Moreover, the clip counters the stereotype as it is the man who is being saved by the woman and girl. Traditionally, in the stereotypes, it is the man who is the saviours, but in this clip it is the women who are saving the man. In addition, the young wears a 'fairy' outfit which connotes that she's the rescuer who is going to save the man. Overall, the clip represents family as a form of unity and holds a strong bond with one another.

ill manours TRAILER review

1) Trailer conventions
-Institutional information, actors/directors, studio/production company
- Title (at end of the film) also the release date
-narrative-disequilibrium, characters
-action sequences/ dramatic moments, action codes
-voice over/ text on screen to establish narrative
-promotional information via social media links
-reviews and quotes
-tag line

2) How are trailers distributed
- typically we can see trailers being shown in cinemas before films but now-a-days trailers are shown and shared via social media such as links on twitter and instagram directing you to you tube video. Also trailers are shown via adverts in between tv shows.

3) How does the Ill Manors trailer use trailer conventions?
-The ill manors trailer features several conventions such as review quotes eg: from 'Time out' also it features the may of the characters but none in detail and it throws the audience off a bit by showing more about 'Kurby and Chris' but in the actual film Ed and Aron are the main protagonists. Moreover, there are many action codes with guns being pointed at different people. There are also social Media links shown at the end as well as the release date. Dialogue from the film is also used to give the audience a better understanding of the narrative.

4)Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

-(some points mentioned in previous bullet point) the target audience would be from 16 although the film is rated 18 the violence would attract a younger teenage audience. In terms of the narrative the trailer doesn't give much away as the different scenes are put together in a montage and the audience doesn't understand the connection between the scenes just from the trailer. Plan B's music is played in the background which is kind of a narrative because the songs relate to the film.In my opinion I think that the target audience for this film trailer should be between 13-30, however it may not be suitable for the younger ages as their is a lot of gratuitous violence and inappropriate scenes and themes including the prostitution side of the film, gang culture/violence and drug abuse. For these reason I would expect the BBFC rating would be at least an 18 rating, this would be based on the sexual references, violence and frequent bad language.

Almost all of the main characters and ones featured in the film are in the trailer, making it hard to see who would be the protagonist, however the use of slow-motion and super 8 editing on some of the clips could have been used to show some of the main characters in more detail and their past. I think that the unique selling point (USP) for this film is that it is relate-able and endorsed by celebrities such as Plan B, the director of the film. This would also help appeal to the films specific target audiences as Plan B is successful in the eyes of young teens and adults who follow his music.
5) How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

- The genre of the film is modern/urban crime and with it being urban its set in the most densely populated cities in England-London. It focuses more on the backstreets of  London which help emphasise the genre. Furthermore, various social classes are represented here with canary wharf being seen in the distance of several shots suggesting people in the a/b bracket are separated from people in the c1 bracket, and this is where the film is set in council estates. Also the council estates reinforce the genre of modern crime because the media often associates crime to be sourced from low-income areas which although does occur is exaggerated.

Moreover, the dialogue is significant in establishing the genre because the colloquial language of east London is specific to that area and makes it seem more urban and authentic. Also, the film addresses many modern issues through the dialogue and filming such as prostitution and poverty. The colours are simple with mainly dark colours produced from a constant gloomy sky. Also,  in the film trailer we see the use of many close-ups, for example the close up of the cocaine which is edited in a which show off how someone may feel after taking it as it looked quite grainy almost like a super 8 film. Also there is some black and white footage in the trailer, this then leaves the audience to speculate what the genre could be as it would've been a new twist on a modern crime dramas.

Institutional context

1) There are several tests needed before a film can culturally class as British:  Cultural context eg, If the film is set in the UK, cultural contribution so reflecting British culture, cultural hubs so the post-production will be British such as the music and cultural practitioners, which include screenwriters and producers being British.

3.The main problem for the British film industry is that British film distributors cannot afford to finance and provide synergy for the film so they may then end up becoming bankrupt. Bigger Hollywood distributors are able to sell the film in North America and internationally as they are usually part of a conglomerate so can provide synergy between businesses. Also, big named American actors are drafted in so that there is an appeal for people to watch the films even though they are British.

4.The three strengths of the British Film industry is that they have outstanding facilities and that is has outstanding creative skills presented from its Directors, this is evident from films like Twelve years a slave which was directed by someone British

5.As funding is hard to come by British film productions may have to co-produce their films with American companies in-order to get the essential funding and distribution needed. They may also need to produce smaller budget films aimed at a primarily British nice audiences for it to show off cultural balance and typical British societies.

6.If the British film industry were to side with their American counterparts then i believe some spectacular Hollywood like action films may be produced but they may also want to show off of Britains typical cultures that the rest of the world want to see, such as our Royalty and old heritage.

film review

Review

(film planning not posting)
Ill Manor is an Urban-crime drama set in East London, there are two central protagonists, Ed Skrein
and Riz Ahemd. Specifically in East London it was set in Forest Green which made a suitable location to film because of the dilapidated buildings and streets alike.  The film was written and directed by musician Plan B who had previously written a film called ‘Michelle’ which was about the prostitute who acted in the feature length version ‘Ill Manors’. This film also has a tracklist created by plan B.

Ill Manors starts with a drug deal and just drugs in general being shown throughout the film. Ed and Riz are on a corner selling drugs when the police intervene and Ed is kept over night in a cell, Although the Police were prevalent at the beginning throughout the rest of the movie they cease to exist until the end when the Russians are raided by armed police. For many people in Britain who live normal lives they wouldn’t have seen drugs being sold or used and for a small (ish) area, drug use is a little exaggerated. This is also the case for the amount of violence and gun crime, seeming as firearms are illegal to own in the UK a lot of people seem to have them as though they are toys. The film is said to reflect social-realism, granted in many scenes it does however the violence is over-exaggerated for a London area.

The film has an accompanying soundtrack with 28 songs all created by director Plan B. The songs that feature in the movie were explicitly created for it and the lyrics talk about the events going on in the scene in a little more detail than what the scene will initially give. The film was inspired by the London riots in 2011 which were very vivid and this gave the writer lots to put in the script as well as the songs. The album is a ‘cross promotion’ with the film because plan B’s musical audience are being pointed towards his film and the people watching his film are being directed towards his music.

The film is fairly low budget but managed to rake in a profit of over £400,000 in the 8 weeks that it was in the British box-office. Plan B managed to save money by hiring some pretty un-heard of cast members, there was only a couple of actors that have a higher profile- Riz Ahmed who has featured in many other films such as nightcrawler ect… and Ed Skreins who his plan B’s childhood friend and acted in a short film made by plan B prior to Ill Manors. Theses two actors were also the main protagonists and throughout the film the audiences opinion changes of them as in the beginning Ed can be seen as a villain and a thug but towards the end the audiemce will be more sympathetic towards his as he gives his own life to save a babies life. Moreover, throughout the film Aron played by Riz is seen as a compassionate ‘drug dealer’ as where others may not think twice about doing something wrong Riz would do the opposite as he felt sorry for the girl being prostituted and took care for the baby when the mother left it on the train, and despite selling it (which was as a result of Ed)  he went back to retrieve it which shows to the audience that he has a sense of right and wrong.

The target audience for this film, in my opinion would be from 15-25 despite it being rated an 18 by the bbfc. It was also made for an Art house audience but not a typical middle class/ middle aged white audience but a newer type of audience who could relate to the situations in the film. It may be equally suitable for male and female, however it may be a more predominantly male audience due to the violence and rap music which is usually associated with boys. This film is also more suited for a British audience as it is a fully British film and funded by British money (Micro Wave films London).Audiences may also see London of a place to avoid, this is because there were various shots of characters around the new olympic park in 2012 (the time that it was filmed) so people may have been put off to see how much violence there actually was around a highly protected sporting event.
